The device charges the battery in three phases: constant current, absorb voltage, and float voltage charging. At the beginning of a charging cycle, the device checks the battery voltage and regulates current/voltage accordingly. The table below summarizes the register bit recommendations to configure the device as a Lead-Acid battery charger.
| PARAMETER | I2C REGISTER BITS | VALUE | EQUIVALENT PER 13.2V FLOAT V |
|---|---|---|---|
| Three-Stage Charging Control | EN_3_STAGE_CHARGE | 1 | N/A |
| Absorb Voltage | VBAT_ABSORB | 0x3 = 140mV + VFB_REG | 14.4V |
| Absorb Timer | CV_TMR | 0x5 = 5hr | N/A |
| Temperature Compensated Charging | EN_VREG_TEMP_COMP | 1 | -18mV/oC |
If the charger device is in DPM regulation during charging, the actual charging current will be less than the programmed value. In this case, Absorb to Float transition through termination comparator is temporarily disabled. The device will remain in Absorb phase until either the battery current drops below the ITERM threshold or the CV timer expires. After the Absorb phase, the charge voltage drops to VFB_REG, where it remains indefinitely.
