To improve the safety of charging lead-acid batteries, the target regulation voltage is modified in accordance with the battery temperature. The device provides a -3mV/oC/cell temperature coefficient when using the recommended AT103-2 thermistor (10kΩ, β = 3435K). The FB pin temperature coefficient is -2mV/oC. The battery temperature affects the targets for both the absorb phase charging voltage as well as the float phase charging voltage. This feature is controlled by the EN_VREG_TEMP_COMP register bit.
| BIT NAME | BIT VALUE |
|---|---|
| EN_VREG_TEMP_COMP | 1 |
| EN_TS | 1 |
When EN_VREG_TEMP_COMP = 1, the device implements the temperature compensated charging. In this case, the TS_COOL (VT2 < VTS < VT1) and TS_WARM (VT5 < VTS < VT3) regions are ignored, and the device continues charging with the VFB_REG temperature compensated value until the TS falls outside the COLD/HOT (VT1/VT5) thresholds.
When temperature compensation is enabled, the device will automatically enable the ADC to measure the TS pin every two seconds. The EN_ADC register bit will be set high and TS_ADC_DIS bit will be cleared. Because the ADC is used to sense the cell temperature and correct the voltage, the TS_ADC_DIS bit is inactive when the EN_VREG_TEMP_COMP bit is set to 1. To reduce power, host can disable other ADC channels. The device will not alter other bits in the register such as ADC_RATE, ADC_SAMPLE, ADC_AVG, ADC_AVG_INIT. It is recommended to leave those registers in their default state when using temperature compensated charging.
